Petrological Composition of the Last Coal Seam in the Longmendong Section before the End-Permian Mass Extinction

Late Permian coal deposits are widely distributed throughout southwestern China. This paper describes the petrological composition of last seam in Longmendong section Emeishan area during latest Changhsingian (Permian) and records important information regarding evolution mass extinction event that occurred at end Permian. The results show dominant maceral group is vitrinite, followed by liptinite inertinite macerals, minerals include quartz, chamosite pyrite. pyrofusinite carbon microparticles occurrence modes could have been formed wildfires adjacent areas. β-tridymite high proportions magmatic quartz indicate synchronous felsic volcanic activity peat mire accumulation period. suggest they primarily precipitated from Fe-Mg-rich siliceous solutions was derived weathering nearby basalt. pyritic balls C1 likely result coal-forming plants neutral to weak alkaline conditions late syngenetic stages or early epigenetic within paleomires.
